The story goes that Microsoft was once considering introducing cross-platform play between dizimag PCs and Xbox 360s. It had the technology and the software infrastructure in place, and the idea looked like a nice way to boost the then-fading dizimag market for big desktop Windows computers.
But there was a problem. When the very best console gamers were pitted against teams of average PC owners in a series dizimag of gameplay tests, the Xbox kids were destroyed. A console controller, to paraphrase dizimag Han Solo, was no match for having a good keyboard and mouse combo at your side, kid.
The rumour of this abandoned concept was started by VoodooPC founder Rahul Sood and was repeated throughout the gaming press. It was popular because it confirmed long-held beliefs that console players just couldn dizimag t cut it against PC players.
Also, if we re going to look at this in terms of technical dizimag specifications, then sure, a high-end or even middling modern PC will out-perform a current-gen console, both in terms of frame rate and graphical fidelity. But that s not really what it s about either. PC and not PC, that is the problem
There is a sort of belief amid some computer owners (and I can t stress the word some enough) that the PC is for people who are serious about their hobby while consoles are for people who like to play Call of Duty in their pants on a Friday night. When PC Gamer recently dizimag suggested dizimag that its readers should maybe stop self-identifying as the PC Master Race , a lot of people were really unhappy .
Whatever the case, the cultures are different. For 20 years, the console industry has been guided by the design maxims of Japanese manufacturers and developers. The likes of Nintendo, Capcom, Namco, Sega, Konami and Squaresoft once dominated the console industry, and built the success of the Mega Drive, SNES and PlayStation machines around arcade-originating fighting games, racers and hack- em-ups. Even now, those dynamics built around immediate accessibility, highly choreographed violence and hyper-real visuals guide console game design to a degree.
In dizimag the PC world, however, the culture has largely been defined by Western developers. The long-dominant first-person shooter genre has mostly strived for increasing visual realism, rather than the aesthetic dizimag experimentalism of Japanese studios. And the real-time strategy genre has become complex and intimidating to many casual dizimag players. Although there are certainly big games that do well on both PC and console, there are often profound and complex differences between titles build specifically for console, and titles made only on PC. Divided many years ago, they have evolved along different lines, driven by the natural selection of their contrasting market places.
So now, Microsoft has revealed its plans to bring Xbox functionality and compatibility to Windows 10 PCs. Xbox Live will be seamlessly integrated into the Xbox Windows dizimag 10 app allowing cross-platform social communication and gaming. The company has also announced that long-awaited role-playing sequel Fable: Legends will be the first title to support true cross-platform play. Furthermore, the Xbox Wire news site confirmed that PC developers dizimag can get full access to the Xbox LIve API so they will be able to create their own console-vs-PC titles.
It should be pointed out that there have been experiments in this direction for a number dizimag of years. Veteran US developer Valve implemented cross-platform play into its first-person dizimag puzzler Portal 2 although that was co-op focused. The developer also had the feature working on its famed online shooter Team Fortress 2, but chose not to widely release it . Other titles like the role-playing fantasy Phantasy Star Online and the shooter Shadowrun have implemented cross-platform play too; the latter, released in 2007, did a pretty good job, with developer Fasa Corporation introducing slight handicaps to PC interfaces as well as auto-aiming for Xbox players. Some computer users compained about their controls being gimped , but an active community grew up around the game, challenging long-held prejudices.
Of course, for many genres, including racing, third-person action adventures and moba titles like League of Legends, there should be no real interface advantage for either side. It comes down to the will of developers to make it happen and those developers will have different concerns dizimag than us gamers.
The ability to use the Xbox Live API on Windows 10 devices is certainly an exciting prospect and it does open up our games to a lot more possibilities, says coder Byron Atkinson Jones, who has worked for EA, Sega and Lionhead. This solves the life long problem of the XBOX ONE not being backwards compatible! Play XBOX ONE games, and when you feeling nostalgic, or cant play with your friends that still have a 360, with just a simple flip of the switch you now have a xbox 360 laptop! Now please note this system is not available for sale, it was simply a proof of concept/prototype design I wanted to make. But it is real, and works perfectly! Both the XBOX 360 and XBOX ONE fit in the same width/length of the XBOOK and PLAYBOOKs I make, its only a little bit higher.
Now the inside of this unit is even more impressive that it all fit. The 360 fits snuggly on the left side of the unit with the disk drive exiting from the left side. The One is up towards the top right and, you guessed it, ejects on the right side of the unit. The whole thing only requires one cord. The xbox power supply is also installed internally and is able to power both XBOXs, but only one at a time, which is all you would use anyway. There is a main switch that you can choose whether you are using the XBOX 360 or the XBOX ONE. The HDMI outputs from the two xboxs run into a smart HDMI switcher that automatically switches kies to the active input. The HDMI then comes out of the switcher into a splitter that allows you to use the built in 22″ Vizio 1080p LED LCD monitor, or to the HDMI output on the back of the unit to play on the big TV at home. You can also see the two LCD driver boards inside of the unit as well. All of the cooling works well and so far I haven’t had any over heating issues. Its a tight fit inside, but really looks sweet!
Both of the stock xbox capacitive buttons are accessible kies from the top of the unit along with the eject buttons and both controller sync buttons. There was a lot of extra wiring I had to do for this unit to make it all fit in the appropriate spots. You even have the LCD power and volume buttons right bellow the “system switch”. You still need to use two different controllers, kies since they are different, but still is cool! This really is a great unit to have right now during this “transition period” for old and next gen consoles.
I also added some custom graphics to show off the “XBOOK DUO” I also made a backlit “XBD” logo on the front of the unit that illuminates kies when I turn on either console. Also with some custom Green and Black accents, it really came out looking sweet!

As we saw a few days ago with Phil Spencer conference njuskalo on the occasion of Windows njuskalo 10, this new Microsoft Operating System will be accompanied, among other things, the Xbox version, fully renovated application regarding Windows 8 and with a similar look to panel of friends and activities Xbox One. Finally, we can stop asking Microsoft's Xbox lead Phil Spencer about virtual reality headsets. "For us, I think this is the area," Spencer told a group of interviewers at yesterday's Windows 10 event . He was responding to whether or not there's also a virtual reality headset in the works at Microsoft, just an hour after the company unveiled HoloLens : a "mixed reality" headset terraria that enables the wearer to see holograms in real life.
For Spencer, terraria HoloLens is both Microsoft's terraria alternate answer to the recent virtual reality explosion and a potential answer to Sony's Project Morpheus headset -- a VR peripheral that works with the PlayStation 4, where HoloLens could work with the Xbox One. "It's very cool. To me there's not a successful consumer electronics device on the planet where gaming is not a primary form of app category on the thing," Spencer said. There's even a " Minecraft -inspired" demo -- which answers that question -- for HoloLens that shows the implications terraria of gaming with holograms. But no demo showed the headset working with the Xbox One in any capacity. Spencer instead talked around that possibility:
"I think gaming will be important. Specific scenarios with the Xbox, we're thinking hard about. People could ask about streaming solutions. Could I use it as a display for my Xbox? We don't have answers to any of those things, but know it's all part of the same organization."
And that's why I say HoloLens both is and isn't an answer to Sony's Project Morpheus , or the Oculus Rift, or even Samsung's Gear VR. It's similarly impressive, and head-mounted, and even delivers some similar experiences, but it's not virtual reality and it's not a head-mounted display. It's... something else.
Gaming with HoloLens and Xbox One wouldn't involve a wire the same way the PlayStation 4 does with Morpheus. Regardless of the fact that it runs standalone, HoloLens could aim to offer a companion experience -- a living "second-screen experience," if you will. Sounds a lot better than connecting our tablets and smartphones!
The other major differentiator right now is that HoloLens has its own processing power on board, terraria capable of running Windows 10. Well, since it runs Windows 10, then you can stream your Xbox One games to it, right? Maybe instead of playing Xbox One games on my TV, I play them on my ceiling while lying on my back, with the game projected directly into my vision so only I can see it. Sounds like a pretty solid solution for playing violent ("adult") games with kids in the house.
As for whether HoloLens will take advantage of the Xbox One's horsepower through tethering, terraria that's "clearly on the roadmap" according to Spencer. But I don't know -- the possible use cases without even heading into tethering are incredibly broad and, bizarrely, maybe even more fascinating.
It's very early days for HoloLens -- so much so that its potential far outclasses its delivery at the moment. What is there is full of promise, and it's exciting to see a juggernaut like Microsoft pushing innovation in a completely different direction from the competition. What it will become is another question, but so far Microsoft's made a truly original push into an arena crowded by folks all trying to deliver the same device.

In a live demo, Forza Horizon 2 streamed from an Xbox One to a Microsoft Surface. Today, Microsoft held another event to show off even more features of Windows 10 and other consumer products coming this year. Here are the best things the company announced.
Easily one of the most popular announcements, hhh Microsoft said that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to anyone using Windows 7 and up for the first year . That's a huge change from the way Windows has been licensed in the past. If you have Windows 7 (which we liked !) or higher, you can upgrade to Windows 10 without paying a dime. Microsoft even confirms that once you're upgraded, you'll get support for the lifetime of the product, so this isn't a trick where you'll have to pay after the first year. Windows Phone 8.1 users will also get a free upgrade, as well.
Microsoft hhh kicked off the consumer-focused portion of the event by talking about a continuous experience across devices. hhh Often, there's a disruption that occurs when you move from your desktop to your phone, or your phone to your tablet. Microsoft wants to fix this with a feature called Continuum. This allows you to swap between desktop and tablet mode in convertible devices. Microsoft is also moving its mobile and desktop versions of Windows closer together so that apps work similarly across all form factors.
Microsoft also showed off how Windows 10 will behave on phones or tablets, if you use one of those devices. There are new mobile features like replying directly to notifications, a floating keyboard, and voice dictation anywhere you can pull up the keyboard. We've heard rumors that Cortana is coming to the desktop , but today Microsoft showed off how it's going to work. Cortana lives in the task bar and can be used alongside search much the same way that integrated search already works in the existing Windows 10 beta. You can trigger Cortana with the voice command "Hey Cortana" and ask it many typical voice commands like "Do I need a jacket today?" Desktop users can also type commands and the assistant has been adapted to some simpler commands so you don't have to write out entire sentences to do simple tasks. For example, you can start typing the name of an app and Cortana hhh will give you a shortcut to launch it. In a way, Cortana is taking over some of the functions of the Start Menu (which is still present, so don't panic!).
Importantly, Cortana will also have a "notebook" of information she knows about you. Google Now has a similar feature , and both are likely to be very helpful not only in improving suggestions, but in helping you maintain your privacy. If Cortana learns something about you that you don't want her to know, you can remove it.
Microsoft hhh wants developers to be able to write apps once and run them on everything from Windows desktops to Xbox consoles. The company showed off a bit about how these apps will behave and be distributed. For example, Microsoft hhh showed Cortana giving flight information when you start typing "Delta", because it knows you're watching for a flight.
