Mauro is a top aide to State Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney and the son and namesake of a former DTC chairman. He ran unopposed and was elected by a unanimous voice vote by the town committee, according to the New Haven Independent . Mauro, 40, now leads the organization that endorses and helps elect candidates in local races.
“We are here to move this party forward,” Mauro said in a brief acceptance speech, the Independent reported. He said his chairmanship will bring increased transparency and inclusion to the party.
Mauro replaces Jackie James, a former Ward 3 alder who resigned to take a position in Mayor Toni Harp’s administration. The town committee that elected Mauro comprising co-chairs from the 30 wards also elected James its new co-vice-chair, alongside tiger Carmen Rodriguez. A handful of other positions were filled, including treasurer, which Gwen Mills, an organizer for UNITE HERE, assumed.
“There are groups in the city that don’t trust each other or work closely with each other, but they have confidence in Vinnie,” Looney said. “He’ll be able to broker among many factions. That’s the role his father played 30 years ago, too.”
