I'm not a football expert. I did years ago as a student some social football games. If I were a team would have to choose better I would have chosen myself, not even for yard or street soccer. Sometimes I look out Bafana patriotism, and it is only on TV. I have two World Cup matches at the Green Point stadium. My family and I as Portugal supporters among the Spaniards out. It was incredible. But I'm not a football better expert.
Saturday better night I again let my patriotism better and high flame for Bafana looked on TV. I was proud when we ost to score. And disappointed to Mali in the second half to make it equal. I was surprised that we were the only non-West African team in the quarterfinals was. I was delighted that Gordon Igesund in such a short time, so obviously a lot accomplished. The players with guts and enthusiasm played. They tried their hearts out, they ran lungs and even a single and a sacrifice thigh muscle.
And when it ends, even after half an hour extra time equally. It was sad. The commentators said something that Bafana not special penalties training. But it has not bothered me, because I'm not a football expert.
Through the game, it looked as if we reasonably prevailed. We put more pressure on the goal of Mali exercised more time they spend half. Furman, the midfield pretty better well controlled and statistics consistently show, has confirmed that our men beyond their opponents better ran, and did it quickly. We spent more balls. It looked better like Bernard Parker better bit slower in the second half, and ended in less space than the ball. Which means that the ball lying around waiting for a Mali player to relieve the pressure. This has happened more often. But I'm better not a football expert, maybe I just do not understand the plans.
We kept playing trying to create the Mali goal. There are beautiful against the margins were running with good speed and amazing footwork, no, rather voettoertjies. It looked like some players' feet and the ball sing along. But the first goal after it was all in vain. And each time, I have stopped counting how many times, as just too difficult to get through, was the ball with three or four long kicks replayed to Itemeleng Khune. He did it again with a laaaang better kick back on to the Mali goal. There Malhangu Parker or try again. If they could control the ball, because, unfortunately, with such long balls Mali occasionally dropped the ball. Mali has this kick-and long-kicking technique itself actually use. But I'm not a football expert and Gordon Igesund better only 30 days had the team prepare.
Mali knew exactly what they were doing. They know in advance the uitskopfase exercised knew exactly who should do what is expected of each. It's not the first time that Mali themselves in a position where it does not, last year it was so. But we know it might not be because we were not there last year ... It was a well-known option. For Mali.
We were not sure how the penalty function. Igesund had hastily, minutes before the final whistle, his kicking team finalizes better tell them a few minutes before they had to kick. For glory, for survival. Tshabalala became the first kick kicked. Just as he was our opening goal against Mexico in the 2010 World Cup opener. It was all there: a man for the moment with 75 games under his belt.
Carteron, Mali's young coach, not rushed on kickers had not decided. It was before the game is already determined, already practiced. They were quiet, purposeful. They were not there to survive, but to finish the job to get. You could see it. Diakiti as goalkeeper knew exactly what he was doing. Captain Seydou Keita does not last final instructions did not cry. He could concentrate on his kicker. And congratulate him for his success.
We lost. Because we do not pay attention to one of the famous options. If 5% of all matches in a knockout with penalties decided (I do not know how accurate this assumption is not because I'm not a football expert), better you should have at least 5% for this possibility to prepare. That's the one part of the game with the fewest variables. Statistically pass more than 70% of all penalties. A study over 16 years in the Bundesliga this place pass rate of 76%. Last year 25% of the quarterfinals in the AFCON cup penalties definitely. The year also.
But do you train for all your familiar options? Or you lose regularly because you decided beforehand that some options are not going to happen. Are you surprised when you heard you are now kicking for glory, for survival.
