Socially aware lyrics rub elbows with tunes that speak to matters of the heart on this fourth studio outing from Brooklyn’s Joy Askew. The former is represented via “AOAO” while the titular track handles the latter. No matter what Askew sings about, she does it with conviction and ease, such as during the ballad-y “My Life” or “Walk Under Waterfalls”, an ode to Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and Jeff Buckley. Despite convincing performances, Askew has an overwhelming tendency to find a hook and drive it home ad infinitum . Although that’s a staple of pop music, the characters Askew draws so expertly in the verses beg for more time on the stage.
Jedd Beaudoin is an award-winning writer and broadcaster. He holds an MFA in creative writing (fiction) from Wichita State University and hosts Strange Currency six nights week for Wichita Public Radio.
